Recipes and grocery stores often speak different languages.

before I even buy them.

My basic system is:

  1. Decide how many servings the first meal needs.
  2. Write down the store package size.
  3. Calculate how much the recipe will use.
  4. Calculate what will remain.
  5. Assign the remainder to another meal, snack, freezer portion, or later recipe.
  6. Change the package size or recipe when the remainder has no realistic use.

EPA recommends shopping with upcoming meals in mind, writing down the quantities needed, and buying only what you expect your household to use.

The important shift is simple:

Do not stop planning when the first recipe is complete.

Plan the rest of the package too.

Why package size matters so much

The larger package only wins if you can realistically use or store the remainder.

Unit price and usable value are different

Unit price asks:

Usable value asks:

Which package gives me the lowest cost for food I will actually use?
