How to Calculate Grocery Quantities for Two People

Calculating groceries for two people sounds simple:

Take one person’s groceries and multiply everything by two.

Sometimes that works.

Often it does not.

Two people may:

  • Eat different portion sizes
  • Eat different breakfasts
  • Take lunch to work on different days
  • Eat out separately
  • Share some dinners but not others
  • Have different food preferences
  • Use leftovers differently

A more accurate method is:

Then convert that total into the packages you can actually buy.

Start with people and meals, not grocery categories
